NETWORKER SUPPORTER

In the digital era, publishing architecture must take advantage of the potential of content platforms with multiple formats and the possibility of using various channels. However, readers demand — in the face of the avalanche of digital publications — a curated content that is focused and built with rigor and authority.

On its 30th anniversary Actar consolidates its online presence through the launch of urbanNext Lexicon, aiming at the creation and dissemination of specialized content in architecture and urbanism.

The platform is composed of “Lexicons” that organize the more than 4000 posts in clusters of information related to a research topic. The posts are categorized into different formats such as essays, talks, podcasts, book excerpts, projects, and photographic surveys exploring topics and spaces through images rather than words. Apart from providing access to 100 e-Books by Actar, urbanNext publishes weekly content by various influential contributors including architects, urbanists, researchers, artists, and more. Together, they all present the opportunity to engage in the future challenges of our cities.

Pigeon Digital is an online audiovisual collection of illustrated talks by architects and related designers, which has been built up over the past 40 years. Monica Pidgeon was the editor of the influential magazine Architectural Design for more than three decades and believed that being able to hear the actual voices of the designers of buildings, and listen to their ideas in their own words was extremely important. In 2006 "Pidgeon Digital" was born, digitizing the talks and is a continuing archive, to which new talks are added regularly.

Developed and maintained by Yale University Press (YUP), the A&AePortal is a unique digital platform offering a curated selection of important art and architectural history titles, along with books in related disciplines (i.e., visual and material culture, classics, religion). Its library comprises out-of-print, backlist, new, and born-digital books from YUP and various publishing partners, with some 50 books being added each year.

With students expecting content to be available digitally, the A&AePortal is an essential resource: 80% of its content is not available elsewhere in a digital format. It also offers a wealth of possibilities as a teaching and research tool, allowing chapters to be assigned for course use or students to search by image to find related content for assignments.

Among over 380 titles on the A&AePortal are subject focused eBooks on Architecture and Urban History and Landscape Studies.  Coming soon to the platform are Venice and the East: The Impact of the Islamic World on Venetian Architecture, 1100–1500 (YUP); Space, Hope, and Brutalism: English Architecture, 1945–1975 (Paul Mellon Centre); and Eileen Gray, Designer and Architect (Bard Graduate Center).
